How To Make The Most Out Of Your Beans!

How To Make The Most Out Of Your Beans!

Here are a few common questions we get about coffee beans from home brewers, wrapped up in one blog post for when you need a quick refresher.

Q: How long does coffee last?

Coffee will still taste great up to 6-8 post roast. After that window you’ll notice the body of the coffee will start to shift. The acidity softens, the flavour isn’t as bold it becomes flat.

Q: When's the best to brew?

You might think we’re fooling you but it’s a misconception that the fresh is best. You should know that with coffee, a little rest goes a long way. We recommend starting to brew around 1.5 to 2 weeks after the roast date with the ideal time being three weeks depending on the beans - light right or dark roast. We say this because in the days after roasting, coffee beans are still releasing CO2. If you brew them too soon, your coffee might taste gassy or overly acidic, and your extractions can become inconsistent.

Q: How should I store coffee?

Keeping your beans somewhere cool, dark and dry will keep your coffee lasting longer. Think - pantry or cupboard. You can store the beans in the bag they came in but we recommend transferring them to an airtight container like a Tupperware or glass jar to protect them from moisture to keep the beans fresh! If you want to go full barista mode The Airscape is a great product. Built to push out air and protect your coffee from  oxygen, moisture and sunlight. It’s honestly a great choice!

Q: Should I freeze my coffee?

Yes - if you want to store your coffee long term. Coffee can be frozen up to several months but no more than a year. There’s a method to this madness - you cannot just put the retail bag in the freezer and call it a day. You’ve got to portion size your coffee and store it in airtight containers and follow our suggested brewing recommendations.
