This outstanding micro-lot was produced by a collective of farmers from the small town of Gasaka in Rwanda’s Southern province and processed by Buf Coffee. Known as the Kawanziza Farmers Group, the collective provides invaluable support to each other during the busy harvest period, sharing labour and resources in order to prioritise quality. To distinguish and market their coffee as their own they deliver to the station on set days, and profits are shared equally amongst those involved. Kawanziza roughly translates to “beautiful coffee” in the local language, and this lot is no exception.
The cool average temperatures, high elevations and mineral rich soils of the region provide ideal growing conditions, and the attention to detail of both Kawanziza Farmer’s Group and Buf coffee are evident in this delicate cup. Processed at Buf’s Nyarusiza washing station, the coffee undergoes meticulous sorting by hand, machine and water channel. The ripest cherries are mechanically pulped and dry fermented for 8-12 hours before soaking for a further 24 hours. The coffee is then dried over 10-20 days on raised African beds. We’ve roasted this for espresso to highlight its silky stone fruit acidity and lingering honey sweetness.
